US bank losses intensify recession fears

Platinum set a new record of $1,587 an ounce, while silver hit $16.58 an ounce, the highest figure in 27 years.

The dollar dropped to a record low of 1.0912 Swiss francs, while also hitting seven-week lows against the euro and the yen. At $1.4890 to the euro, the dollar is near to breaking the 1.50 barrier. That is widely regarded as a psychological milestone which could produce a much wider sell-off of dollars as countries currently accumulating dollars—especially the oil states and Asian exporters—seek to shift their surpluses to euros, yen or a basket of currencies more likely to retain their value.

The latest dollar plunge was said to be in response to comments last week by Federal Reserve Board chairman Ben Bernanke, in which he pledged “substantive additional action” to prop up the US economy, a statement widely viewed as a pledge to continue cutting US interest rates by at least a half percentage point this month.

The man is suspected of committing a series of nine home invasions from May to October 2006. The most violent occurred on July 20, 2006, when Jacques Sénécal, a 61-year-old artist and teacher, was fatally shot during a robbery of his home in Laval's Ste. Dorothée district.

The same man is believed to have shot and injured a Verdun businessman on July 17 during a home invasion on LaSalle Blvd.

Recession-proof your life

I am in the middle of the "perfect" storm. My savings in the stock market has dropped $100,000 and my house has dropped in value too. I filled out the FAFSA when my son entered college and got absolutely nothing. Now that my stocks have dropped and I have two kids in college. Should I still fill out the FAFSA again? What are middle-income parents to do? - Debbi, New York

I know how hard it is, but to your question, a resounding yes! The drop in your home value probably won't affect how much aid you get, but the loss of money in stocks may have an impact.

Here's what to do: fill out the FAFSA again and then call the colleges' financial aid office and ask for a Professional Judgment Review. This is how the school can make adjustments to what kind of financial aid you get.
